Synopsis

The late Morrie Camhi, a distinguished Californian photographer and descendant of Greek Sephardic Jews, visited Greece and produced portraits of some of the members of that community. His subjects are depicted in the context of their daily lives. As such, the images constitute exquisite historical documents. They are reproduced by a duotone process so as to maintain the quality of the original photographs.

Review

I would also like to recommend a remarkable volume, Faces & Facets: The Jews of Greece, photographs the late Morrie Camhi .... The book offers portraits of Greek Jews young and old from all walks of life amid their possessions or tools of their trade: a hat seller in Larissa; an advertising executive in Athens; a dry-goods seller in Trikkala; greengrocers in Larissa; a shoe wholesaler in Salonika; a music student in Volos. Fascinating. --Masha Leon, Forward

Indeed, this book is really three books in one. The first is Camhi's written description of how he went about meeting his subjects and how he decded to take the photographs. Nikos Stavroulakis, as well as others, helped him chart out a course to visit Jewish communities throughout Greece.... This narrative I found invaluable, reading it before looking at the photos made the images more valuable and real.[...]
The 80 photos in black and white add to the somber air of the subjects presented. The portraits are beautifully done and I could not help but thinking I knew these people from the pictures that were being shown. [...]
...the inner strength of this photographic collection made [the images] very attractive and evocative. --Bob Nussenblatt, Lettre Sépharade
