From the acclaimed, award-winning poet, this new collection is a gripping search for life and truth.
From Thylias Moss, one of America's most innovative poets, comes Tokyo Butter, perhaps her most innovative book to date. Inventing new poetics as she goes, Moss applies her exhilarating capacity for language to a synthesis of the personal, the historical, and the cultural. She searches searches for vestiges of Deirdre, a beloved cousin who has left the living; for hints of Cindy Song, a college student missing since 2001; and for manifestations of her true self in the archaic wings of science.
Moss' imagination is, as always, ravenous, interrogative—but in Tokyo Butter there is an urgency amidst the jagged, beautiful verse that has become her trademark.

This collection of poametry (in which I make "poams" products of acts of making) demonstrates "limited fork theory" --all my making comes out of this --and did before, whether or not it was called that.
"Last Chance for the Tarzan Holler" explores this also, but is more fully formed in "Tokyo Butter"--a collection I was inspired --make that compelled to write upon the death of my cousin Hilda (called "Deirdre" in "Tokyo Butter". The cover image is a scan of a rose from Deirdre's funeral, a scan I made with a USB microscope (attaches to my laptop). I believe that parts of her are still in the world. She was like a sister to me (born just three months before I was); this book is a search for forms of her --wherever I could find them. There is a "poam" that runs throughout the book, "Lake Deirdre" from page 3 through page 22 --only in the margins at the bottom of these pages. This "poam" progresses horizontally while every other "poam" is positioned vertically; on page 23 --right after the end of the horizontally progressing "poam" on page 22, the first vertical poam about Deirdre appears: "Heads Wrapped in Flowers"The table of contents is called: "Search Results" and may be read as another poam --as can the "REFINED SEARCH (HIGHLY SELECTIVE)" at the end, pages 127 - 128 which functions as a sort of "poametry index" --directing readers (experiencers --and therefore also forms of collaborators according to limited fork theory tenets)-- to pages in the collection where certain highly selective themes, and ideas, --images from the poams themselves may be found. In the end, I did find evidence of Deirdre --wherever I looked --and I'm still looking, still finding almost every day.
All is not well with the world. Young girls are missing and never return, young men are wrongfully thrown in prison and lose whole decades of their lives, a Japanese dairy company sells tainted milk and falsifies expiration dates on seven-hundred-sixty tons of butter. The same exquisite cells that protect us from disease run amok and attack the myelin sheath. Thylias Moss has never been a poet of easy comforts, and Tokyo Butter is Moss at her most distinctive. With fury and exhilarating velocity, she heads straight ito the maelstrom. She excoriates; she sings. From the lost traces of a childhood friend and the fated sorrows of Ulster myth, from absence itself, she wrings "a kind of witness and believer protection program." She is a priestess and debunker, skeptic and celebrant, in a single dazzling trajectory. -- Linda Gregerson
