Synopsis

Down East Books, Camden, Maine [Published date: 1989]. Hardcover, xvi, 156 pp; illustrated throughout with black-and-white line drawings by Edith Allard; 24 cm. Jacket illustration "Home" (1938) by Carroll Thayer Berry; jacket design by Edith Allard. The author's third collection of essays and newspaper columns written from his Brooklin, Maine homestead "Amen Farm." Following A Countryman's Journal: Views of Life and Nature from a Maine Coastal Farm (1981) and A Countryman's Bed-Book: More Observations on Country Matters from Amen Farm (1987), this volume gathers sixty-four reflective pieces on gardening, village life, and rural philosophy. Barrette (1906-1993), formerly an aviation insurance executive, retired to Maine with his wife Helen in 1962, where he became known for his wry, gentle observations on New England country living. [From rear jacket flap] Roy Barrette and his wife, Helen, moved to the village of Brooklin, Maine, in 1962. They renamed their homestead Amen Farm and started planning the extensive gardens that have since made it a Hancock County landmark. Gardening, writing (as the Retir'd Gardener, "in the sense of being secluded, not retired from work"), and collecting books for his large personal library keep Roy Barrette busy in his retirement. Before settling down to these tranquil pursuits, he served as chairman and senior officer of Parker & Company International, Inc., a Philadelphia aviation insurance brokerage firm. Although born in the United States, Barrette spent much of his youth with his grandparents in rural England. He also served as a merchant seaman and deck officer for Nelson Steamship Company before beginning his years with Parker & Company.
