This beautifully illustrated tale present a daughter's tender memories of growing up in rural America - from chasing mourning doves across shafts of sunlight and playing hide-and-seek between the cows to swinging from a rope into a featherbed of hay. At the center of her memories are the songs her father played for the cows and the love he showed for his daughter.

Maryann Weidt was born in southern Minnesota, where she grew up on a small dairy farm. A former children's librarian, she is still learning about the world around her and still telling stories. Ms. Weidt continues to reside in Minnesota where she listens to the music of Patsy Montana, Gene Autry, and the Sons of the Pioneers on the CD player in her car. Henri Sorensen, the illustrator, burst onto the children's book scene in 1991. He has since illustrated several children's books including titles by Alvin Tresselt and Laura Krauss Melmed. Mr Sorensen lives in Denmark with his wife and their two daughters. From School Library Journal:
Grade 1-5?This joyous paean to cows and farm life is undergirded by constant music?cowboy songs and yodeling on the radio, the cooing of doves, and a child singing loudly and happily. Lush double-page spreads show the girl and her experiences spending time with her dad as she grows from babyhood to about 11. In the barn, richly evoked by watercolors in hues of ochre, mahogany, and gold, the Guernsey cows chew patiently while Daddy milks. This glimpse of a perhaps forgotten era, what with milking machines and the passing of playing cowgirls, nonetheless evokes the warmth and satisfaction of farm life and will strike a chord with some rural readers while showing urban readers why someone might love being where "...the air smelled of wet cows and steaming manure."?Susan Hepler, Alexandria City Public Schools, VA
