CLIP - Hundreds and hundreds of books have been written about Richard Wagner, and it would seem that there shouldn't be too much left to say about the German composer and his music. Yet strange as it may seem, there is one seminal area that has escaped the atte ntion of researchers thus far. There has never been a full-scale examination of the religious, spiritual, and mystical ideas of Richard Wagner, despite the fact that religious thought represents one of the fundamental underpinnings of Wagner's life. As P rofessor Aberbach shows in this groundbreaking new study, no true comprehension of the man and his important prose and artistic works is possible without an understanding of this fact. Richard Wagner was intrigued by religious questions that went beyond the more obvious "Who put me here and why?" His religious and spiritual ideas evolved over years of sometimes intense questioning of the nature of religion and its all-too-often conflic ting conceptions of God. As Aberbach shows, a particular impetus to his questioning came through a reading of the fourteenth-century Sufi mystic Hafiz. Shortly thereafter, exposure to the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer introduced Wagner not only to Bu ddhism, Hinduism and novel aspects of Eastern mysticism, but to an appreciation of Meister Eckhart, the great Dominican mystic of the Middle Ages.
