This is the sixth set in an ongoing series providing coverage of the lives, careers, and achievements of individuals from antiquity to the present. It is the first to focus specifically on women. It includes people who have achieved international recognition for their accomplishments, as well as lesser-known figures who are deserving of attention. Featured are 409 women whose lives have had an impact on American society and culture, including 45 African Americans, 11 Asian Americans, 8 Hispanic Americans, 8 Native Americans, and 7 Canadians. The range of figures covered varies from colonial poet Ann Bradstreet and Sacagawea of the Lewis and Clark Expedition to such contemporary women as Nobel Prize^-winner Toni Morrison and comedian Carol Burnett.
Articles begin with general facts about each individual. The remainder of the article is divided into four parts. The "Early Life" section covers the subject's life up to the point at which her major work began. "Life's Work" covers the period during which her most significant achievements were made. The "Summary" section constitutes an evaluation of the woman, providing an analysis of her achievements in the larger context of American culture and women's history. Closing the entry is an annotated bibliography for further research. Featured in volume 5 are indexes by name and occupation and a time line that places each woman in chronological order based on date of birth.
Thirty-three of these women are also covered in other titles in this series (American series and Twentieth Century series), though the essays here are new. Also, information on most of these women is available elsewhere. Most of the deceased women can be found in Notable American Women; living ones are in Current Biography. High-school and public libraries needing coverage in this area should consider purchase.
