The idea for this book came from an intense dialogue at the Institute on Teaching Public History. The discussion raised fundamental questions about the discipline of history itself The assumption which underlay the discussion was that historians needed training to teach "public" history because it somehow constituted a different or at least distinctive type of historical inquiry. A second assumption was that those who USED history in the public arena were involved in a 'profession" far different from those who taught history in an academic setting. In either case, the implicit message of the discussion was that there was an inevitable separation between traditional history programs which focused on academic texts and more innovative public history programs which were oriented toward activity and public promotion of history
