Synopsis
A challenging and fascinating group of essays which were delivered at a symposium in Washington in 1993. They are all concerned with the ways in which the sculpture adorning the most important temples in 5th century Greece may reflect the political issues of the time. The papers are by: Helmut Kyrieleis ( the temple of Zeus at Olympia ); Olga Palagia ( Athena in the east pediment of the Parthenon ); Jerome J. Pollitt ( the meaning of the Parthenon frieze ); Alexander Mantis ( the Parthenon ); Angelos Delivorrias ( the Theseion ); Evelyn B. Harrison ( the Temple of Athena Nike ); Erika Simon ( the Nike temple parapet ). By way of contrast there are three essays concerning the architectural sculpture of Imperial Rome by: Mario Torelli ( the Arch of Trajan at Beneventum ); Paul Zanker ( In search of the Roman Viewer ); Mary T. Boatwright ( the Traianeum in Italica (Spain) and the library of Hadrian in Athens ).
