Reviews

An engrossing and moving tale of a young woman growing up and surviving during World War II in Eastern Europe. Nina and her family endured the hardships of daily Soviet life in the late 1930s and Stalin's reign of terror, suffered the loss of family and friends in war and Nazi occupation, adapted to life in German labor camps, and escaped the repatriation of Soviet refugees mandated by the Yalta agreement. Global war and politics are reduced to human terms. Nina, a lucky youth, gives voice to the many who perished. Recommended for World War II collections.
