The Most Rev. Richard Challoner was a bishop and leading Catholic figure in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Most recognized for his revision of the Douay Reims Bible, he originally received Holy Orders in 1716 at Tournai, Belgium. He later disciplined himself earnestly, was highly charitable, and possessed the gift of prayer in a marked degree. His many written works include Think Well on It, Grounds of Catholic Doctrine, The Ground of Old Religion, The Life of St. Teresa, The Morality of the Bible, and Rules of Life for a Christian. Bishop Challoner died after a two-day illness on the twelfth of January, 1781, at the age of 89.
