This is a study in depth of the history of South Africa, from early times to the present day. The book aims to combine scholarship with readability and to question, and often overturn, long-held beliefs and cherished myths.

Despite the flood of books about South Africa, this work is surprisingly unique in that it is comprehensive, up-to-date, copiously illustrated, and quite balanced. That is not to say it may not find its critics in some quarters, but under the supervision of Colin Bundy and Christopher Saunders, two respected historians, it has presented the history of all races and includes social and cultural as well as political and economic developments. Although resembling a textbook in format, it is too good to be limited as such in usage. It belongs in all collections and will be especially useful for students and general readers alike.
