About the Author:

Gregory D. Kaufman is the founder and president of Pacific Whale Foundation. In 1975, he came to Hawai i, the primary mating and calving area for humpback whales in the North Pacific and began some of the first field studies of the behavior of live whales. Greg s work on humpback whales has taken him to every corner of the Pacific and has resulted in the most complete and extensive catalog of humpback whale tail fluke identification photographs in the Southern Hemisphere. He is author or co-author of numerous books, peer-reviewed and popular articles, symposium reports and conference posters. He has served on the Hawaiian Island Humpback National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Committee, a contributing scientist to the Southern Ocean Research Partnership, co-led the United Nations Environmental Programme's Regional Workshop on Marine Mammal Watching in the Wider Caribbean Region and is a contributing advisor to the International Whaling Commission s Five Year Strategic Plan for Whalewatching 2011 2016. Greg and his family live in Maui, Hawaii. Paul H. Forestell is a tenured Professor of Psychology at Long Island University who has served as Program Coordinator and Dean of Undergraduates at the former Southampton College; and as associate Dean and Provost at LIU Post. He is currently the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Keuka College. Dr. Forestell is a widely published expert on marine mammals. He serves as Board Co-Chair for the Pacific Whale Foundation in Maui, Hawai i and was the foundation s director of research for eight years before joining Long Island University in 1996 as the director of the psychobiology program at Southampton College. He is on the board of directors of the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum and is a board member of the World Association for Co-operative Education (WACE). In addition to his teaching and administrative positions at LIU, Forestell has taught at the University of New Brunswick, University of Hawaii, Selkirk College in British Columbia and the School for Field Studies in Beverly, Mass. Paul and his wife Nancy live in Keuka Park, NY.
