About the Author:

Bryan Hirst qualified in Landscape studies and Contract Management at Kingston School of Architecture in England. He turned his attention to water gardening and has run his own company, Waterlands, since 1996, creating, restoring, and developing ponds, lakes, and water features.

From Booklist:

Hirst's book outlines the principles and practices of building, landscaping, and maintaining ponds that use flexible liners and modern materials or--in a few cases--traditional methods. There are instructions for building 10 ponds ranging from informal natural ponds to raised brick ones. They include a planted stream on sloping ground, a formal canal, a wildlife pond with a bridge and beach, a pond with decking, a split-level pool, and a mosaic pond with a fountain. Hirst explains designing and planning methods and warns that there's a fair amount of hard work involved. He describes how to install liners, pumps, pipework, and lighting, and what construction materials and tools are needed. There are chapters on laying concrete, on choosing and establishing plants, and on balancing the ecosystem. Some of the projects would require a large lot, but others won't take up much room.
