Gr 6-10--Forty-eight pages, a third of which are black-and-white photographs or cartoons, cover just the basics. The seductive appeal of belonging to a gang, drugs, and violence are addressed; anti-gang activities are mentioned. Inserts, headed ``Did you know...?'' cite statistical data up to 1991. A brief glossary explains terms; three agencies are listed for further information. Sandra Gardner's Street Gangs in America (Watts, 1992) provides more detailed and in-depth information as does Evan Stark's Everything You Need to Know about Street Gangs (Rosen, 1992). Street Gangs appears to be aimed at reluctant readers, but the vocabulary and writing style require students with adequate skills. A starting point or an additonal resource for a bibliography, but its use will be limited.
