Book by Delis, Leftare P.

While serving in the Coast Guard during World War II, Delis was stationed in the small fishing town of Wrangell, Alaska, where he began writing about the beauty, people, and rugged life of the village. He has fashioned his observations into this highly descriptive novel, with characters such as Dave, the middle-aged dentist still living with his parents; Clarence the barber, a tense, lonely, and bitter man unable to sustain a close relationship; Chris, the handsome, heroic owner of the local cannery; and Bea, who hardly ventures out after the suicide of her son. Two attractive women from the States arrive to teach school, setting heads turning and hearts fluttering. Though the characters are well drawn and the many events vividly chronicled, the lack of a storyline forces this lengthy narrative to rely on descriptions of Alaska's people and places.
