Reviews

Since 1961, Amnesty International has been fighting human rights abuses around the world, a cause that won it the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977. In celebration of this remarkable organization's 30th anniversary, this handbook educates readers on AI's three major goals: the release of "prisoners of conscience," fair and prompt trials for all political prisoners, and the abolishment of torture and the death penalty. It also discusses other major AI issues: the "disappearances" of prisoners, the rights of children and women, refugees, and human rights education. The book's second half covers AI's structure and what volunteers can do. It also includes some commonly asked questions, the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Statute of Amnesty International. For all public library collections.
