"Purvi Shah’s Terrain Tracks explores journeys through space and time in beautifully sensuous lyrics charting the dislocations and locations of immigration, memory, love, and loss. Shah’s poems interweave India and New York, tracing the tastes and fragrances of cultural memories, conjuring the feel of New York in its everyday restless movement, tracking women’s lives from family, to work, to love, to transformation. She captures the forces of desire: for the lover traveling away or toward her. Her vivid images keep the reader near the concrete, making the abstract palpable. The imagination and the body’s touch share the same terrain in these moving poems." -- Harriet Davidson
In this debut prize-winning book of poetry, Purvi Shah explores migration and belonging. The book celebrates and riffs upon roots while opening up dialogues on contemporary American issues. Through movement on trains, in nature, and with family, Terrain Tracks charts the possibilities and edges of desire, love, hope, and our journeys for home.

I crave dialogue, the conversation that completes poems.
As I dialogue with readers, I learn more about the poems myself. In this way, they are never done, though their genesis may be quite specific: a plant of jasmine, a New York City manhole, a national tragedy.
When I return to Terrain Tracks, I am surprised. These poems, written over the course of a decade, mark evolutions of feeling, being, and witnessing -- their own wisdoms which yet strike me anew.
I love the journey this book has taken -- how the poems evoke readers from students, activists, to emerging poets. I treasure the responses of visual artists, how my imagery has been brought to view in paintings and photographs.
I love that the book is done but the journey is not: may it be full of surprises and visions yet -- for us both.
"When I read Terrain Tracks, I watch Purvi Shah help the world through a sieve. Her words have the power to ease the world into this position. It comes through with the riches of its colors and sounds opened in a way similar to a prism opening light. It is, falling into my hands, melting there, exploding there, worlds drop by drop, essence by essence, an understanding that was not mine until Purvi Shah gave it to me in Terrain Tracks." -- Thylias Moss
"In these poems Purvi Shah's voice moves through desire, memory, dream, the blossoming of delight, the pain of loss, the measure of our everyday lives laid out in fine detail -- whether it's growing grass in a tin in a Brooklyn apartment, or flying kites in India -- as she tells of a woman's life lived across borders, the longing for home." -- Meena Alexander
"As we venture into these poems, our senses sharpen. Colors and aromas come to the fore, blending with the inner life of lyrical being. Such is the realm of Purvi Shah." -- Lawson Inada
