Reviews

Grade 2-3 The Carricks have added a welcome chapter to the story of their small protagonist's travels through the perils of childhood. Christopher, returning with his class on a subway from a visit to a city aquarium, is separated from his partner and left alone at a strange stop. Luckily, a security man notices him and turns him over to the police, who see that he is soon reunited with his teacher. (One false note here is that Christopher's class appears to be supervised by only one adulta highly unlikely circumstance in real life). This picture book explores the fear of abandonment, one of children's strongest fears, in a matter-of-fact text that tells the story without scary dramatics, and in satisfying pictures in soft, light colors that lighten the atmosphere of the institutional settings. This book is sure to generate a waiting list. Ruth Semrau, Lovejoy School, McKinney, Tex.

Christopher's class is going on a field trip to the aquarium. They take the bus into the city and the subway to the aquarium. Christopher is especially excited about the subway, which he has never ridden before. The ride inbound is funthe car rocks back and forth; the brakes squeal around a corner. But on the way out, the crowd pushes Christopher out of the car and he is left behind. After an initial panic, Christopher gets the help of a transit worker and a policeman, and is reunited with his class. In this most recent of the Christopher stories, the Carricks ( Patrick's Dinosaurs ) expertly create a dramatic situation and portray the inner feelings of a lost child. The illustrations aptly convey the confusion underground, Christopher's stark moments of real fear and the friendly clutter of the police station where his teacher, distraught but reassuring, finds him when the ordeal is over. Ages 5-8.
