Until now, no one has undertaken the compilation of this reference book which contains descriptions of the terms and events of Greek and Roman sport, and information about the athletes who excelled in those events. This book supplies that information. The dictionary proper lists Greek and Roman athletes, events and terminology in one sequence. Biographies range in length from several lines to several paragraphs. The Appendices contain a listing of athletes and, where applicable, their horses, and a list of citations from ancient sources that appear in the text.

Many aspects of modern sport, such as high salaries for professional athletes, streamlined apparel, and pursuit races, were not unknown to the ancients. This work describes these and many other aspects of ancient Greek and Roman sports, athletes, stadia, and related vocabulary in 300 entries that range in length from one sentence to two pages. Its brevity and readability, geared toward the layperson, make this book quite browsable and useful as a starting point for further reading. Most entries cite the classical texts from which they were gleaned, with no attempt made to assess their validity or to explain allegory or metaphor. Supplementary essays and lists could have been tied in with better cross references. This unique contribution to classical and sports history collections is recommended for academic and public libraries.
