Bob Walker (1952-1992), a self-taught photographer and environmental activist, photographed San Francisco’s East Bay landscapes between 1982 and 1992. His images, together with his advocacy, helped contribute to the designation of new parklands, now permanently protected from development. Some photos document open space that has been lost forever to urban and suburban sprawl. This book includes more than 80 of the best images of the 40,000 Walker donated to the Oakland Museum of California. The photographs, combined with descriptions of his activism, create a revealing portrait of a remarkable region what has been saved and what can easily be lost. This full-color book is published in collaboration with the East Bay Regional Parks District, which encompasses 65 parks in 97,000 acres of Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

About the Author:

Marin-based author and documentary film producer Christopher Beaver was born and raised in Northern California. Over the years he and his films have won numerous awards, including a National Emmy in News and Broadcasting, a U.S. Film Festival (Sundance) Grand Prize for Documentary, and a Guggenheim Fellowship.

With a penchant for California but an eye on the world, his lens has captured everything from the links between nuclear power and nuclear weapons, the San Francisco Bay and it's open space border, to water policy in an age of global warming. His most recent film is <Survival in the Delta: A Journey into the Delta of California's San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers. After the Storm is Christopher's first book, inspired by his admiration for Bob Walker's work and subject matter, as well as by his own personal friendship with Walker. Having worked with him through several film projects on Bay Area environmental issues, finishing this book for Christopher has in part been an unspoken promise to ensure that Walker's work continues to receive recognition and have an impact on the public sphere. With a new bond measure on the near horizon for the East Bay Regional Park District, the message is just as timely as before.

Christopher will be curating the forthcoming exhibit of Bob Walker's photographs at the Oakland Museum of California--the exhibit, titled In Our Own Backyard, will debut on March. 15, 2008
