CHARLES BOSSOM
(Ely, CAMBS, United Kingdom)

Book Description Garnstone Press, London, 1971. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Dust jacket slight wear to edges, price clipped. Brown cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. Previous owner's neat inscription on ffep. Edited by Donald Adamson , Plates 191 pages clean and tight. T. S. Eliot's work is famous throughout the English-speaking world, yet surprisingly little is known about his life. This memoir, the first to be published, sheds much new light on one of the supreme poets and playwrights of the twentieth century. Written by a literary critic who was one of his close friends, it highlights the important moments in Eliot's creative life: his boyhood by the Mississippi; his sailing on the Atlantic coast; his time as a philosophy student at Harvard, in Paris and at Oxford, and the decision to abandon philosophy for literature; his friendship with Bertrand Russell and the Bloomsbury group; the steadily growing tensions of his first marriage, culminating in a separation; and his baptism into the Church of England, in which the author of this memoir played a considerable part. There' are also chapters on Eliot's works. It has been usual until now to think of The Waste Land as reflecting the aftermath of war. We now see it as also reflecting the strain in Eliot's life with Vivienne, his first wife. This book was left unedited by Robert Sencourt at his death in 1969, and has been prepared for publication by Donald Adamson; seventeen previously unpublished photographs are among the illustrations. It has value for all who are interested in T. S. Eliot and in the sources of creative inspiration. Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # 135880
