9780900785931: Masterpieces of European Arms and Armour in the Wallace Collection and Complete Digital Catalogue of European Arms and Armour

Published on a USB drive, the Complete Digital Catalogue presents all the arms and armor held by the Wallace Collection in more than 7000 new photographs, ranging from whole pieces to close details and presenting them from many angles. This magnificent and visually stunning resource is both rapidly searchable and is fully comprehensive, containing also the texts of Sir James Mann’s 1962 catalogue of the European arms and armor―which remains a fundamental reference work for the collection and for arms and armor studies in general―A.V.B. Norman’s 1986 Supplement and every catalogue going back to 1900.

About the Author:

Award-winning reporter James Mann is the author of the "New York Times" bestseller "Rise of the Vulcans: The History of Bush's War Cabinet" and "The China Fantasy: How Our Leaders Explain Away Chinese Repression", among others.

Dr Tobias Capwell began his career in arms and armor at the Royal Armories, Leeds, and gained an MA and PhD in Medieval Studies at the Institute for Medieval Studies, University of Leeds. In 2003, Dr Capwell joined Glasgow Museums as Curator of Arms and Armor, and has since then produced numerous books and articles on aspects of the Glasgow collection, including a new edition of the 1924 catalogue of the R.L. Scott Collection and a new general guide to the collection, The Real Fighting Stuff: Arms and Armor at Glasgow Museums. In 2006, he took up his present role as Curator of Arms and Armor at the prestigious Wallace Collection in London, England.

Review:

“The dazzling arms and armor at the Wallace Collection have always been legendary and this book for those who are fascinated by such things certainly does it proud. The colour plates are terrific and you can spend a long time studying the detail of a pommel or a scabbard or a helmet even.... (The Birmingham Post)

“The selection of masterpieces is exactly right, and if you could do a touring international exhibition of arms and armour from the Wallace Collection, this is what you would choose. Despite all of the other publications, there is room for this one (though you should really have all the others as well), and if you need just one, buy this one. Toby has done a terrific job in selecting, writing and getting this fine book published.” (Royal Armouries Journal Arms and Armour)

Book Description Trustees of the Wallace Collection, United Kingdom, 2011. Mixed media product. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. The collection of arms and armour at the Wallace Collection is widely recognised as being one of the largest and most important in the UK, representing both European and Oriental arms and armour. The European part of the collection was acquired primarily by Sir Richard Wallace, mainly in 1871, from the collections of Sir Samuel Rush Meyrick, founding father of the serious study of arms and armour in Britain, and that of the Comte de Nieuwerkerke, Director of the Louvre under the Emperor Napoleon III. It is thereby an important surviving example of the 19th century passion for collecting arms and armour, with the earliest pieces of armour dating from the 14th century, the earliest sword from the 10th century, while the very fine historic firearms collection spans the 16h to the 19th centuries. In Masterpieces of European Arms and Armour in the Wallace Collection, curator Tobias Capwell along with David Edge, Head of Conservation, introduce this significant collection in an historical context, highlighting 70 of the collection s most interesting objects, spanning from before 1400 to after 1800. Additionally, the Complete Digital Catalogue presents some 7000 new photographs of the collection on a USB drive. The text is based on Sir James Mann s 1962 catalogue of the European arms and armour studies in general, as well as A.V.B. Norman s 1986 Supplement and other key catalogues.
