From a contemporary review: "There is very much more to this volume than a reproduction in modern French of Nicolas Contat's manuscript, Anecdotes Typographiques and the burlesque poem on the wretched experience of an idealistic young printing apprentice by Defresne. Each work is provided with an introduction, that for Contat's work extending to over twenty pages, there are several plates, copious notes, and three important appendixes. The first reproduces in two-dozen pages of line blocks poems addressed by printers to their master or his family, most often on the occasion of a marriage, but sometimes because of an honour bestowed on the master. Bibliographical details and a short note are provided for each of the seventeen examplesAll in all, a most valuable book, especially read in conjunction with other such accounts, and combining in a most commendable manner, scholarship and delight."
