Condition: Gut. 107 p., with figures and photos, Good condition. -- Charles Rennie Mackintosh apparteneva a due mondi: al piccolo, ristretto mondo nordico degli architetti di Glasgow con le loro associazioni professionali e a quello più vasto, senza barriere nazionali, dove nasceva il Movimento Moderno dell'architettura e del design. Fu così sin dall'inizio della sua carriera. Il primo successo personale, l'incarico (1896) di costruire la Scuola d'Arte di Glasgow, gli giunse pressoché contemporaneo al riconoscimento europeo ottenuto alle mostre di Parigi e di Liegi; mentre al completamento (1899) della prima parte della Scuola segue, alcuni mesi più tardi, l'accoglienza entusiastica tributata a Vienna all'arredamento ed agli oggetti di arte decorativa inviati da lui e dai suoi soci di Glasgow alla ottava Mostra della Secessione. Intorno ai primi anni del 1900, il favore che si era acquistato in campo architettonico fu tale da garantirgli un lavoro stabile; il "Glasgow style", di cui egli era il massimo esponente, era diventato celebre: lo imitavano anche gli architetti e i designers mitteleuropei e del " Middle-W est" americano. -- -- Secondo Mackintosh, era giusto che un architetto scozzese traesse ispirazione da fonti scozzesi. In un documento per una conferenza del 1891 sull'architettura baronale scozzese, egli descrisse questo stile turrito, da fortificazione, che predominò in Scozia dal dodicesimo al diciottesimo secolo, come l'unico " che si possa in tutto o in parte definire nostro ". Afa se era giusto che gli Scozzesi guardassero alla Scozia, era altrettanto necessario evitare il genere di "pastiche" in voga a quell'epoca. L'accettare un linguaggio tradizionale, Mackintosh diceva, non significava " strangolarlo in fasce come fanno quei noncuranti e insensibili che copiano gli esempi dell'antichità senza adattare lo stile alle esigenze moderne ".
