In his foreword, Seyyed Hossein Nasr "Over forty years have passed since the death of Ananda Coomaraswamy; yet his writings remain as pertinent today as when he wrote them, and his voice echoes in the ears of present-day seekers of truth and lovers of traditional art as it did a generation ago. In contrast to most scholarly works which become outdated and current philosophical opuses which become stale, Coomaraswamy's works possess a timeliness that flows from their being rooted in the eternal present. It is therefore with joy that one can welcome a new collection of essays of this formidable metaphysician and scholar."

ANANDA K. COOMARASWAMY (1877-1947) was born to Anglo-Ceylonese parents. After completing studies in Geology he soon became interested in the arts and crafts of his native Ceylon and India. In 1917 he relocated to the USA where he became Keeper of Indian and Islamic Art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, establishing a large collection of Eastern artifacts and presenting lectures on their symbolic and metaphysical meaning. An encounter with the seminal writings of perennialist author René Guénon served to confirm and strengthen his view of the Perennial Philosophy. From this period onwards Dr. Coomaraswamy began to compose his mature--and undoubtedly most profound--works, adeptly expounding the philosophia perennis by drawing on his unparalleled knowledge of the arts, crafts, mythologies, cultures, folklores, symbolisms, and religions of the Orient and the Occident. His plans to retire to India and take on sannyasa (renunciation of the world) were cut short by his sudden and untimely death.

Coomaraswamy (1877~1947), is legendary. Indeed, he has been called one of the greatest intellectuals ('intellect'~the habit of first principles) of the modern era~and with good reason. The scope and penetration of his studies is beyond compare. Altogether his work is a veritable summa of the world's religions and cultures. But the awesome range and depth of his knowledge were never used for the purpose of anything like a personal philosophy. In expounding in unparalleled fashion the 'normal' and traditional doctrine of life, art and worship as an expression of the common metaphysical doctrines of the world's sacred traditions Coomaraswamy handled the diversity of his material as the varying dialects of a single, universal Truth. In his Foreword Seyyed Hossein Nasr writes: 'Over forty years has passed since the death of Ananda Coomaraswamy; yet his writings remain as pertinent today as when he wrote them and his voice echoes in the ears of present day seekers of truth and lovers of traditional art as it did a generation ago. In contrast to most scholarly works which become outdated and current philosophical opuses which become stale, Coomaraswamy's works possess a timeliness which flows from their being rooted in the eternal present. It is therefore with joy that one can welcome a new collection of the essays of this formidable metaphysician and scholar. . Let us hope that these essays will be read with a view of drawing from them those universal and perennial teachings which can be applied to all times and climes and with the help of which alone man can charter in this life a path which is truly worthy of the vocation of being human.' What is Civilisation? brings together some twenty previously unpublished and uncollected papers of their author, many of them being among his most famous and seminal. It therefore represents a major addition not only to Coomaraswamy's published work but of those works that authentically interpret, without compromise or distortion the metaphysical, spiritual and symbolic dimensions of the Philosophia Perennis.
