A Selection of postcards from the early years of this century by Gregory Holyoake. Deal was once one of the four most prosperous ports in the country. With the silting up of Sandwich Haven in Tudor times, the town of Deal grew in importance until superseded by neighbouring Dover. Even in the reign of Elizabeth I it had been customary to station a fleet in the Channel waters off Deal, but wiht the development of the Naval Dockyard in Stuart times, the town became a bustling, thriving port.
