Book Description Brisbane; Boolarong Press, 1984, first Australian edition, hard bound in color illustrated laminated board hard covers, 6 1/2 x 10, glossy page stock, FINE CONDITION, 282 pages, well illustrated, end paper maps, bibliog., index. The loss of H.M.A.S. Sydney was Australia's greatest and saddest naval loss. It was not simply the magnitude of this loss, but the mystery built up around it; an aura of deception and betrayal added to the grief. This was largely unnecessary, but those who knew the facts and understood the background were bound by normal oaths of military secrecy, and when they were free to speak out, their voices were drowned by the clamour of those who knew little and understood less. And clamour some did, regardless of common sense or common decency, careless of the hurt they caused.I started this book seven years ago, without any preconceptions, and determined to find and write only the truth, as far as it can be found out at a distance. If somewhat more space is devoted to Kormoran's activities than to Sydney's, that is because she was engaged in more action, and because what sometimes appear to be trivial details about her construction, her armaments, her orders and her early activities become important in evaluating subsequent capabilities and actions.
