"There's a . . . detachment that happens as a physician when you're dealing with frightening, horrifying, or sad events that you maintain an objectivity that's required, and I do that also when I write." When so many tales of the dark fantastic are told as if with exclamation marks, Dr. Michael Blumlein's sonorous, objective voice is refreshingly chilly. This collection of 12 elegantly crafted stories (first published in 1990) displays a range of subject matter defying categorization as science fiction, horror, or fantasy. The title story, nominated for a World Fantasy Award, is a provocative thought experiment about gender identity. Other topics include radical surgery with political intent, a child's flight into another realm, a technopunk romance, and various surreal excursions into minds obsessed with family secrets, hauntings, madness, poverty.
In these twelve stories we enter the darkest corridors of America's hospitals. Meet a scientist who discovers how to predetermine and alter the sex of a pregnant woman's fetus, and proceeds to contemplate his own gender...and a surgeon whose primary practice is removing organs and limbs from unwilling patients to redistribute them to unfortunate victims in impoverished countries. Filled with dark surprises, these splendid tales invite us to glimpse the world of high-tech medicine from a disturbing new angle.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Caldwell, T. M. (illustrator). 1st Edition. "FIRST EDITION" on its copyright page. Included with this book is the publisher's "Advance Praise for THE BRAINS OF RATS" review slip. The book's title page is signed, with no personalization or inscription, by author Michael Blumlein. In the upper right corner of the half-title page there is a stamped image in red ink of a pig. This stamp's ink color matches that of the image of a microscope/gun printed on the book's title page, but the pig stamp ink slightly bleeds through the page so must have been applied after the page was printed. (Perhaps it was a whimsical way to mark the publisher's review copy?) Excepting the pig stamp, this book is in fine condition. Its binding is sound and square, with no spine crease. Covers are unmarked and unworn, with bright silver titles on its spine. Pages are unworn and otherwise unmarked. Its dust jacket, now protected by a removable mylar cover, is in fine condition: whole, bright, unmarked, and unworn. I will ship this book in a moisture proof zip-loc bag, padded in bubble wrap, inside a sturdy box to assure it reaches its new owner in the same condition as my description. Signed by Author(s). Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Caldwell, T.M. (illustrator). 1st Edition. Minor shelf rubbing to the edges, very little wear overall. Text is clean. 'When I first read 'The Brains of Rats,' I was astonished by the voice of the male narrator - I had never heard a man speak with such considered self-deprecation of his sexuality, or exhibit so much thoughtful but relentless vulnerability. Even more startling was the quiet sadness with which Blumlein's narrator set forth his unpopular and very politically incorrecty position on the final inequality of the sexes (and I do not speak socially or morally here but rather physically). In all of his work, Blumlein writes of men and women as if they were two different species, with scant hope of final congruence or emotional reciprocity.' Illustrated. 197 pages.
