The Forgotten Art of Building and Using a Brick Bake Oven by Richard M. Bacon A practical guide to the homeowner who wishes to date, renovate, or use an existing brick oven, or to con- struct a new one, this book is, to our knowledge, the ONLY PUBLISHED WORK on the subject. Like other folk arts, building and using a brick bake oven involved skills that were passed on from generation to generation by word of mouth, observation, and example from the days of the earliest American colonists until the advent of the cast-iron cook stove. Realizing there were no written guidelines avail- able, author Richard M. Bacon set out to research the subject for an article in Yankee Magazine. This book is his answer to the tremendous response generated by the Yankee article and demand for more details from people all over the country interested in restoring or building a brick oven for home use. The book explains the evolution of the brick oven from the 17th through the 19th centuries, outlines the basic points to consider in building such an oven today, and describes in detail construction of a brick oven - ash pit complex, including the tools required, procedures to be followed, types of brick and mortar, lintels and doors, plans, dimensions, and actual brickwork, graphically illustrated with photographs, diagrams and drawings. Also covered is how to heat and use such an oven, once built. The only one of its kind, this book provides a valuable link, missing for years, between Colonial times and the 20th century.
