Max Steele's exquisitely crafted stories have long been admired and studied by readers and writers alike. These fourteen stories demonstrate the range and depth of this distinguished writer. "Beautifully wrought . . . these stories stay deep in our consciousness."--The New York Times Book Review.

Every summer Simpson and his wife Mary travel to the wildest places they can find in northwestern Montana, the Canadian North Woods or Alaska, where they backpack, hunt, fish and revel in the majesty of nature as yet unspoiled. Shunning campgrounds stuffed with motor homes and buzzing with generators , they prefer to spread their sleeping bags out in the open, separated from other tourists by as many hundreds of miles as possible. Simpson ( When the Water Smokes ) poetically describes some of North America's most spectacular scenery and recounts in vivid detail his adventures with bear, moose, elk, wolverine and blizzards. The book, beautifully written, is suffused with a sense of wonderment and concern for the open spaces that are fast disappearing on this continent. Illustrations not seen by PW.

Steele here presents 14 stories, most ) lightweight and some seemingly snippets from larger writings. "Forget the Geraniums," "The Silent Scream," and "Ah Love!" are all candidates for a nonsense or joke book, while other stories are ultimately ineffectual because of plot and stylistic experiment. Steele can nicely handle detailed description, but in "What To Do Until the Postman Comes" and "Tin Can" he overuses exposition to flesh out weak tales. Only "The Hat of My Mother" and "The Glass-Brick Apartment" are appealing in their childhood reminiscences. A weak collection. Glenn O. Carey, Eastern Kentucky Univ., Richmond
