RECENTLY (OCT. 19TH) SELECTED BY GARRISON KEILLOR FOR INCLUSION ON HIS PROGRAM, "THE WRITER'S ALMANAC"!
This book is made up of Mike O'Connor's poems from Taiwan, where he lived for nearly fifteen years during the late 70s through the early 90s. They focus on the people and the culture, the history, the superstitions, and the religions of this island nation. The book includes a handful of O'Connor's skillful translations from the T'ang Dynasty, including works by Wang Wei, Li Po, and Tu Fu. But the bulk of the poems are O'Connor's own, recording, through imagery, figures, and the intensity of his own voice, his experiences on the island. He creates music out of cultural dislocation, and harmony out of separation and loss.
