Isaac Norris Hibberd was born at Darby, Pennsylvania, in 1862. He left his father's farm when about nineteen to go to sea on sailing ships and continued in maritime activities for the rest of his life. He died in 1934 at the age of seventy-two. His eleven years at sea included nine roundings of Cape Horn as a "boy", seaman, and mate, and seven roundings as master, for a total of sixteen.
