Gr. 4^-6. In a book offering both folktales and activities, the danger is that one will exist only to serve the other. Milord's book is nicely balanced--the folktales are pleasantly varied, and the activities, which avoid the banality of gluing glitter on a picture, sometimes go beyond the making of an object. For example, a story about a czar and a clever peasant maiden is followed by a section on riddles, a number puzzle, and directions for decorating an egg. The illustrations are many and colorful, and a nice range of cultures is represented. Teachers and parents will like the combination of tales and activities, whatever their provenance.
