This volume, part of a three-volume set, updates and emends the excellent earlier (1979) edition by Walter Hurst. With the main text derived from the U.S. Copyright Office's Catalogue of Copyright Entries: Motion Pictures 1940-1949 , editor Baer assists the user in ascertaining the copyrighted status of 18,767 films copyrighted in the United States from 1940 to 1949. The wealth of listings not normally found in film guides--serial episodes, War Department shorts, Hearst newsreels, industrial footage--makes this a useful volume for business and military historians, in addition to video entrepreneurs. In terms of depth and size, it is comparable only to the Copyright Office's own work. The other two volumes in the series cover the periods from 1894 to 1939 and 1949 to 1959. Highly recommended for medium and large academic and public libraries. The publisher is offering credit of $150 toward the purchase of this volume to libraries owning the first edition.--Ed.
