Synopsis

SignWriting is a way to read and write the handshapes, arm movements, facial expressions and body gestures of any sign language in the world. Sign languages are becoming written languages because of SignWriting. Although reading and writing sign languages may be a new idea for many signers, writing sign languages is starting to spread in sign language communities around the world. SignWriting Literature, written in the movements of sign languages, preserves the language and culture of Deaf people, and aids in teaching sign languages for both Deaf and hearing people. This Lessons in SignWriting CD-ROM includes several textbooks on SignWriting in several languages, all on one CD for Windows or Macintosh computers. Some of the books included on the Lessons CD are: The Lessons in SignWriting Textbook by Valerie Sutton, SignWriting Basics Instruction Manual by Valerie Sutton, the SignWriting Lessons Book from Spain, and SignoEscritura from Spain by Steve and Dianne Parkhurst, the SignWriting Textbook from Norway by Ingvild Roald, and other SignWriting textbooks and documents from around the world, in English, French, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish and Arabic. The Lessons on the CD-ROM are provided in three formats: 1. Lessons Web Gallery, viewed in a web browser 2. Lessons PDF Library, a long list of documents in Adobe Acrobat PDF format 3. Lessons Database, viewed in SignBank Runtime or FileMaker Pro, for Windows or Macintosh The Lessons in SignWriting CD-ROM package also comes with the SignWriting Basics Manual printed in pocket-size with spiral bind.

About the Author

SignWriting was first invented by Valerie Sutton in Denmark in 1974. It is one of five sections of Sutton Movement Writing, a system for reading and writing body movement. Sutton, born 1951, grew up in professional ballet training in Southern California, and first invented DanceWriting, preserving the historic Bournonville Schools, a ballet system used by the Royal Danish Ballet. In 1974, while she was teaching the Royal Danish Ballet to read and write dance, a researcher at the University of Copenhagen, Lars von der Lieth, asked her to develop a way to read and write the movements of signed languages. This was the beginning of SignWriting. Valerie Sutton has dedicated her life to developing a useful writing system for all sign languages, that can be used on a daily basis by signers of all ages, using any sign language. Sign languages are not international. There are different sign languages in each country, each with its own unique grammar and structure, and the SignWriting International Alphabet (the ISWA) writes them all, because it writes body movement. The signs may mean different concepts in different sign languages, but the movements (the way the signs look) can be written with the same SignWriting symbols. The SignWriting Script, used by thousands of people worldwide, is officially recognized as a world script by the International Bureau of Standardization (ISO). A variety of software programs developed for SignWriting, including SignWriter DOS in the 1980 s and 1990 s, and SignPuddle Software in the 2000 s, have brought writing Sign Language Literature into reality. The SignWriting Literature Project, founded by Valerie Sutton under the auspices of her non-profit organization, the Center for Sutton Movement Writing in La Jolla, California, is producing SignWriting literature, written in the sign languages of the world, and donating the books and software to classrooms with deaf students.
