9780914778967: Cultural Code Words of the Navajo People: Key Words that Reveal the History, Heart, Traditional Customs and Wisdom of the Navajos

THE TITLE OF THIS BOOK HAS BEEN CHANGED TO:  ARIZONA'S LORDS OF THE LAND--The History, Traditional Customs and Wisdom of the Navajos as Revealed by Key Wods in Their Language. ISBN: 978-1452882734.
Part I of this book reveals the existence of "five worlds" in the mythology of the Navajos (The Red World, The Blue World, The Yellow World, the Black and White World, and the present Fifth World), which covers their creation and their history up to present times, including how they became human and settled in northeast Arizona generations ago.
Part II describes the Navajo way of life, from their Holy People, Sacred Houses, Holy Songs, Famous Ceremonials, and Baby Blessing Rites, to The Magic of Names, Multiple Wives, and the War Culture. Part III covers the coming of the white man, the near extinction of the tribe, the miraculous return of the former "lords of the land," and the return of the Navajo gods.

From the Publisher:

Just one example of Navajo culture is sufficient to reveal that when the first European Americans showed up in Arizona the Navajos were a remarkable poeple (but this was totally unknown to white men): Their language was more sophisticated than English or French, with numerous separate terms for the nuances of rain, sunsets and other natural phenomena. In fact, for some 100 years the Navajo language was the lingua franca of the American Southwest.

From the Author:

I can do no better than to quote John Collier, Commissioner, Bureau of Indian Affairs (1933-1936): "...As one's knowledge of Navajo life increases, one learns that the Navajos have created out of their human material a house of wonder. Their intangible culture matches the splendor of their land. In terms of life--not goods--it is we who are poor, not the Navajos."
