The author has revised and expanded an earlier 2003 edition of the book to include two new chapters, an updated bibliography, additional photographs, and a more comprehensive index. The resulting new edition is not only improved and up-to-date, but expanded by some 90 pages in length. Although many in the Wesleyan-holiness tradition acknowledge the influence of Samuel Logan Brengle (1860–1936) on the late 19th and early 20th century holiness movement, very little theological reflection has been done on the teaching of this “Salvationist Saint.” Sanctified Sanity is part biography, part theological assessment, with a focus on Brengle’s understanding of the work of the Holy Spirit in sanctification. This book makes his numerous writings accessible to those unfamiliar with the teaching of this holiness prophet, presenting Brengle’s thought in the context of his life journey and global ministry. Organized around dominant themes concerning the nature and experience of holiness, Sanctified Sanity provides the reader with a systematic account of Brengle’s holiness teaching while highlighting his ability to explain complex theological issues in laypersons’ terms. R. David Rightmire (Ph.D., Marquette University) is professor of theological studies at Asbury University. In addition to a number of articles and reviews in professional journals, his other books include Sacraments and the Salvation Pneumatological Foundations and Salvationist Gunpei Yamamuro and the Rise of the Salvation Army in Japan.
