The Blood About the Heart is a concise, imagistic collection of poems, linked by a thematic storyline, that deals with life on the streets. Menefee's style in these poems is often graphic, always thought-provoking and deeply moving as she locates the intimate within the naked social landscape of homelessness and need. At the center of the text is the human heart, where the voices of self and other find their dialectic.

From Library Journal:
The brief, impressionistic prose fragments in Menefee's slight second collection (after I'm Not Thousandfurs , Curbstone, 1986) seem more like journal notations than poems. One entry reads: "thin men on Mission St selling their blood"--no punctuation, no sentences which begin with capital letters. Set in San Francisco, these pieces profile street people: flower children of the 1960s merging with the homeless beggars of the 1990s, particularly those too independent or too crazy to seek out shelters. Although the author describes her own episodes of mental breakdown, hollow rhetoric like "it's the dead who make us kind" contributes to an air of distance that turns her subjects into "them" rather than less fortunate members of "us." Perhaps more appropriate for sociology collections; many of the entries also contain explicit sexual imagery.
