Despite its title, this is not a book about occult practices. Spiritualism was in its heyday when this book first appeared. The author, trusting intuitive methods in healing, and "convinced of the existence of intelligent spirit," was guided by her common sense. Health concerns were not so different in her time than in our own: pollution, incompetent medical treatment and dangerous chemical drugs. Mrs. Matteson's book is valuable for many simple and formulated recipes using herbs, fruits and spices. This edition makes available an important American herbal which deserves a modern-day audience.
