A short history of Sewanee, founded in 1857 by Southern Episcopal bishops who wanted to educate Southern men in the deep South. Bishop/General Leondias Polk, Bishop James Hervey Otey and Bishop Stephen Elliott made plans to found an "Oxford of the South" only to have the Civil War intervene. AFter the war, Bishop Otey dead and Bishop Polk killed at the Battle of Pine Mountain, Sewanee was refounded.
