"I Am Not Dumb" is one of the few books endorsed by the UN Commission for the International Year of the Child. It is the only book that explores Learning Disabilities in a Child's language and from a Child's perspective.
Children can sometimes be very cruel, engaging in name calling and teasing. Using a story format, "I Am Not Dumb" strives to help children gain empathy for those who have a Learning Disability, the "invisible disability", by assisting them to become more tolerant. This book helps children become aware of the pain they unwittingly inflict when they disregard other children's rights. Practical activities offer opportunities for children to experience first hand the difficulties encountered by those with Learning Disabilities. By using examples that violate the UN Rights of the Child, the book offers a unique learning opportunity to promote empathy for the shunned, the isolated and the neglected
"I Am Not Dumb" is a book nearly every child should read. It will help them better understand themselves and each other.

I was born in South Africa where I spent most of my life opposing apartheid before I was forced to leave my homeland. For me, I always saw the apartheid regime as a "State Bully" no different from the school yard bully. Hence my empathy for all those who are victims of oppression and injustice.
In working with learning disabled children, I discovered how many people, children and adults, lack empathy for those who are disabled. In their disregard, they sometimes inflict terrible pain on those who are experiencing great difficulty in trying to overcome the obstacles which is their lot.
It is my hope that "I Am Not Dumb" can help readers obtain that "first-hand" experience which is so essential for a better understanding of the special needs and problems of disabled people.
