Connoisseurs of wildlife art have a great treat in store with this galaxy of Guy Coheleach paintings and sketches, accompanied by his own commentary. Wieland, a contributing editor to Sporting Classics , presents an engaging account of the artist and his career: after a stint in the Army and study at Manhattan's Cooper Union, Coheleach worked in advertising, drawing brassieres and candy boxes; for a while he was a magazine illustrator. Then, veteran wild bird painter Don Eckelberry helped him shift to painting wildlife. Coheleach made several trips to Africa to hunt and paint, and nearly lost his life when charged by an elephant. The publication, in 1982, of The Big Cats brought him recognition; he works in gouache, watercolor, acrylic and oil on subjects ranging from rhinos to race cars. His paintings are marvelous, and this is a magnificent book.
