The author has firsthand experience with child abuse and neglect through her 20 years of experience in inner city hospitals and public health departments. Case studies illuminate her sobering description of the variety and severity of child abuse from ancient times to the present. From inadequate prenatal care through the intolerable emotional pain that results in runaways and suicides, Murdock delivers a clear message on the responsibility of society, government, and the individual to recognize and prevent child abuse. She concludes that laws are in place and funding available for abuse prevention and treatment, but emphasizes that only individual action will stop the abuse. Recommended.
