This collection republishes some of the essays by the late founder of Parabola , a quarterly that explores one mythic theme per issue. The essays on creation, ceremonies, androgyny, and "the inner landscape" are enhanced by 17 poems, most of them previously unpublished. These meditative pieces express a universal spiritual tradition. Dooling believed that world mythology would help us "decipher our own unconscious symbols, unravel the real meanings behind our actions, and witness unblinkingly the parts we actually play": her essays use story, vivid imagery, and beauty of expression to lead readers to see that "the present moment is one of power, of magic or miracle." Recommended for public libraries.
