About the Author:

Jack Satterfield is a public relations manager for The Boeing Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Swarthmore College and holds advanced degrees from North Carolina State University and the U.S. Naval War College. A private pilot, Satterfield is also an officer in the U.S. Naval Air Reserve, specializing in anti-submarine warfare. He enjoys writing about aircraft, military and naval history. Father of four, including a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy, he lives near Wilmington, Delaware.

Suddenly, however, the incomprehensible swept over them like a tidal wave....the grand scale of the world war became immediate and real, reaching nearly everyone in the country. Through the Sullivans, people learned that war means real human suffering, and that anyone can suffer. They could measure the cost of America's war efforts in the Sullivans' despair, displayed in newsreels and photos. And they could consider more directly and urgently than ever before the grim possibility that their own sons, fathers or brothers might not come home.

The Sullivans reflected more than sadness and loss, however. The public viewed them as bedrock Americans, possessed of simple faith in their country and the rightness of its cause, who believed without question the idealistic notion that loss of loved ones in the nation's defense is a burden worth bearing, part of the cost of victory. 'We stick together,' was not just the family's motto; it summed up their interpretation of the nation's creed.
