9780931432699: Stop Improving Yourself and Start Living

This is a book about choice. Roberta Jean Bryant gives readers a wealth of support in choosing discovery and growth over the malaise of the perpetual recovery mode. She insists that it is dangerous to stop compulsive behaviors without experiencing other changes in thinking, feeling and relating to the world.

It's important to move beyond false goals such as being thin or not drinking to positive goals such as healthy relationship with food or enthusiastic sobriety. Then the next step is to focus on increasing positive involvement with life not recovery from depression, for instance (although depression can have a physical component), but recovery of self-esteem, joy, creativity, and well-being. Recovery of health, not recovery from illness, needs to be the goal. Occasionally a product I use and enjoy comes out in a "New and Improved" version; usually I don't like it as well. The older I get the less I want to be new and improved. More and more I seek simply to risk being fully who I am.

Review:

Women have been especially susceptible to the huge self-improvement industry, from touring the support-group circuit, to constant dieting, to "how to improve whatever" books. Since I have a personal aversion to this mind-clogging, "self-help" rhetoric, this title immediately caught my attention. When I started reading, I liked it even more. Roberta Jean Bryant proposes that we get off the merry-go-round and move forward in our lives. She's not trashing traditional programs that deal with life threatening addictions, just pointing out the need to move past the illusion of change. Her book concerns itself with process, or, in other words, teaching you how to make your parts function together in a forward motion. It invites you to shed the artificial support structures and junkie-like cycles of perpetual recovery, and to live with self-acceptance. -- From The WomanSource Catalog & Review: Tools for Connecting the Community for Women; review by Ilene Rosoff
