About the Author:
Slavko Janevski (1920-2000), renowned Macedonian poet and novelist, screenplay writer, and painter, was born in Skopje. He joined the Partizans during WWII. At the war's end in 1945, he published the first of several collections of poetry; however in 1966, with Bread and Stone and The Gospel According to Old Peyo, his bold metaphorical experiments established his reputation as one of the most original and compelling of the nation's poets. The presiding imaginative spirit is Sly Peyo with a sensibility U.S. readers can recognize from Indian tricksters' tales.
