An impressively comprehensive work on artists active from 1898 to 1947, this is a compilation from the original 30 volumes of American Art Annual (1898-1933) and Who's Who in Ameri can Art (1935-47)a span broad enough to include artists who were at their peak decades before 1898, e.g., Bierstadt and Whistler, as well as con temporary artists who achieved promi nence at a young age, e.g., Motherwell and Pollock. A historical record with information originally obtained from the artists, it is augmented by biograph ical data often compiled from obituar ies. The guide to abbreviations of muse ums, exhibitions, schools, and associ ations includes brief histories. Artists of all media along with dealers, collec tors, curators, critics, and educators are cited. This attractive, well-bound book is essential for art reference col lections. Highly recommended.
