About the Author

Pál Kelemen served in the Hungarian cavalry during WWI and in 1931, the young officer turned art historian was traveling in Europe, studying art and architecture, when he met his future wife, Elisabeth Zulauf. Elisabeth, born to privilege in the United States was a protégé of a famous opera star and was touring when she met Pál .The two married and soon were on their way to New York , where Pál became interested in Pre-Columbian art, and then on to Mexico. The next thirty years would see them travel all over the Americas, documenting Maya, Pre-hispanic, and Colonial art. Their journeys spawned dozens of articles, papers and eventually books on art, architecture, and the culture of the Americas.

Pál Kelemen was a Hungarian author turned art historian who became a leading authority on the pre-Columbian art and civilization of MesoAmerica. By the time of his death in 1993, he was the author of a dozen works, including the classic art history text, Medieval American Art.
