This book is the first comprehensive treatment of turbochargers and turbocharging to be made widely available in the last twenty years. It is intended to serve as both an introduction to the turbocharger itself, and to the problems of matching a turbocharger with an internal combustion engine. The turbocharger is a highly sophisticated device, which has been described as aerospace gas turbine engineering allied to mass production techniques. Undoubtedly the key to commercial success lies in achieving the correct compromise between performance, life, and cost, and this runs as a continuous thread through the book.

The author dates his first contact with the turbocharger industry to 1974. Since that time he has remained in close contact, first at Imperial College, London, working with the late Professor Neil Watson, and subsequently as a consulting engineer with Concepts NREC, where he has been responsible for many projects related to turbocharger design and development. He has published four books and many papers on turbomachinery. Three papers have been awarded prizes by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He has also served on the organizing committee for the Institution's series of conferences on Turbochargers and Turbocharging. Since 1993 he has been responsible for organizing the long-running series of short courses on the subject of Turbocharging the Internal Combustion Engine, initiated by Neil Watson and now run by Concepts NREC.
